Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, understand, trust and cite in their answers. In practice, GEO means answer-first pages, specific facts and numbers, clear structure, consistent brand information across the web, and technical access for AI crawlers, built on top of solid traditional SEO.
GEO does not replace SEO. Most AI answer engines retrieve live web pages through a search index before they write a reply, so if you don't rank or can't be crawled, you are unlikely to be cited. What changes is the unit of competition: instead of fighting for a click on a results page, you are fighting to be one of a handful of sources quoted inside an answer.
What is generative engine optimization?
The term "generative engine optimization" was popularised by a 2023 research paper from a team including Princeton University researchers, which tested how different content changes affected visibility in AI-generated answers. Their benchmark found that adding things like cited sources, quotations and statistics tended to increase how often and how prominently a page was used, while old-school keyword stuffing did little.
You will also see related terms: AEO (answer engine optimization), LLMO (large language model optimization) and AI SEO. They describe roughly the same goal. We use GEO in this guide.
How do AI search engines choose which sources to cite?
Details differ by product and change often, but most AI answer engines follow a similar pattern:
- Query understanding. The model rewrites the user's question into one or more search queries, sometimes many sub-queries for a complex question.
- Retrieval. It pulls candidate pages from a search index (its own, or a partner's) or fetches pages live.
- Selection. It chooses passages that directly answer the sub-questions, favoring clear, specific and apparently trustworthy text.
- Synthesis and citation. It writes an answer and links to some of the sources it used.
Two practical consequences follow. First, your page is judged passage by passage, so each section should stand on its own. Second, the model also draws on what it learned in training, so what the wider web says about your brand (reviews, forums, comparisons, press) shapes how it describes you, even when your own site isn't cited.
GEO vs SEO: what's the difference?
- Goal: SEO aims for a high ranking and a click. GEO aims for inclusion and accurate representation inside an AI answer, with or without a click.
- Unit: SEO optimizes pages for queries. GEO optimizes passages and facts that can be lifted and quoted.
- Signals: both depend on crawlability, relevance and authority. GEO leans harder on clarity, specificity, freshness and brand mentions on third-party sites.
- Measurement: SEO has mature tools for rankings and traffic. GEO measurement is still young: you track citations and mentions by sampling prompts.
The overlap is large. Google has said publicly that the same fundamentals that help pages in Search also apply to its AI features, so treat GEO as a layer on top of SEO, not a separate discipline.
The GEO checklist: 12 steps to get cited by AI
Content: write passages worth quoting
- 1. Answer first. Open each page with a two to three sentence answer to the main question. Write definitions as one crisp sentence: "X is …". This is the passage most likely to be lifted.
- 2. Use question-style headings. Match how people actually ask: "How much does … cost?", "What is the difference between … and …?". Each heading becomes a retrieval target.
- 3. Make every section self-contained. Avoid "as mentioned above". A model may quote section four without ever seeing section one.
- 4. Add specific, verifiable facts. Numbers, ranges, formulas, dates, named sources. Vague claims ("industry-leading") give a model nothing to cite. Never invent statistics: AI systems and readers both punish errors.
- 5. Cite your own sources. Link to the original study, documentation or data. It signals care and helps both readers and models verify.
- 6. Include an FAQ section. Short, self-contained answers to the questions buyers ask are easy for engines to reuse.
Technical: let AI crawlers in and make parsing easy
- 7. Check robots.txt for AI user agents. Common ones at the time of writing include OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot (Anthropic) and Google-Extended (a control token for Google's Gemini models, separate from normal Googlebot). Decide deliberately which you allow, and note that some vendors separate search crawlers from training crawlers. Check each vendor's current documentation.
- 8. Serve content in HTML, not only via JavaScript. Many AI crawlers do not render JavaScript reliably. If your key text only appears after scripts run, it may be invisible.
- 9. Add structured data. Schema.org markup such as Organization, Person, Product or Service, FAQPage and Article helps machines identify who you are and what a page is about. It is not a guarantee of citation, but it removes ambiguity.
- 10. Consider an llms.txt file. llms.txt is a proposed convention, suggested by Jeremy Howard in 2024, for a Markdown file at your site root that gives language models a short summary and links to your most important pages. It is emerging, not a standard: adoption by AI vendors is unclear and uneven, and Google has said it does not use it for Search. It is cheap to create, so we treat it as a low-cost bet rather than a ranking factor.
Authority: be talked about where models look
- 11. Earn mentions on third-party sites. Reddit threads, review sites, comparison articles, YouTube, podcasts and industry newsletters often show up in AI answers. Being recommended honestly in those places matters more than another blog post on your own domain. Our Reddit and TikTok guide for SaaS covers how to do this without spamming.
- 12. Keep your entity consistent. Use the same brand name, founder name, description and category everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, X, directories, press. Contradictions make it harder for a model to describe you confidently.
A real example: what we do on senerverse.com
We apply this checklist to our own site, so you can see it working rather than take our word for it:
- llms.txt at the root. A short Markdown summary of who SENERVerse is, what we do, who we are and are not a fit for, and links to key pages, plus a longer llms-full.txt.
- Markdown copies of key pages. Pages like the homepage and FAQ also exist as plain .html.md files, so any tool that prefers clean text can read them without parsing layout.
- Structured data. The homepage carries schema.org markup for the website, the founder (Person), our services, an FAQPage and a contact point.
- Explicit robots.txt rules for common AI crawlers, so access is a deliberate choice rather than a default.
- Answer-first blog posts with FAQ sections, like the one you are reading.
We can't promise any of this guarantees citations, and nobody honestly can. It removes the technical reasons not to be cited and makes the content easier to quote.
How to measure GEO results
There is no Search Console for AI answers yet, so measurement is manual or tool-assisted:
- Build a prompt set. Write 20–50 prompts your buyers would ask, such as "best [category] tool for [use case]" or "alternatives to [competitor]".
- Sample regularly. Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (with AI Overviews where available). Answers vary between runs, so run each prompt more than once.
- Record three things: is your brand mentioned, is your site cited as a source, and is the description accurate?
- Watch referral traffic. In analytics, look for referrals from AI products (for example chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai) and add a "How did you hear about us?" option for AI assistants.
- Track share of voice. Mentions of you divided by mentions of you and your main competitors across the prompt set.
Common GEO mistakes
- Writing for robots instead of people. Keyword-stuffed or obviously AI-padded pages are less useful and less likely to be chosen.
- Hiding the answer. A 400-word intro before the definition makes the key passage hard to find.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Some CDN or security settings block bots by default. Check what you are actually serving.
- Ignoring off-site reputation. If Reddit threads and reviews say something different about you, models will notice.
- Expecting overnight results. Indexes refresh and models are retrained on their own schedules. Think in quarters.
Key takeaways: GEO is SEO plus quotability. Put a crisp answer first, use question headings, make each section stand alone, add real numbers and sources, allow AI crawlers you want, add structured data and optionally llms.txt, earn honest mentions on Reddit and review sites, and measure with a fixed prompt set every month.
Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of making content easy for AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and cite. It combines traditional SEO with answer-first writing, specific facts, structured data, AI crawler access and consistent brand mentions across the web.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Most AI answer engines retrieve pages from a search index before answering, so crawlability, relevance and authority still matter. GEO is best treated as an extra layer on top of SEO that focuses on being quoted inside answers, not just ranked.
How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
Make sure your site is crawlable by the relevant OpenAI crawlers, write answer-first pages with clear facts, and keep your brand description consistent everywhere. Just as important, earn genuine mentions on sites that AI tools often draw from, such as Reddit, review platforms and comparison articles.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a proposed convention for a Markdown file at your site root that summarizes your site and links to key pages for language models. It is an emerging idea, not a universal standard, and support across AI vendors is uneven. It is cheap to add, so it can be a reasonable low-cost step, but it is not a substitute for good content and SEO.
How long does GEO take to work?
Expect months rather than days. AI products that search the live web can pick up new pages once they are indexed, but changes that depend on model training or on building third-party mentions take longer. Measure monthly with a fixed set of prompts and judge progress over a quarter or two.
